As is tradition after the 1001-Up.com team visit a gaming event we each reveal our ‘best of‘ where we talk about our favourite aspect. Now it’s Phil’s turn…
While I enjoyed playing the latest video game offerings, especially The Evil Within, not even the highly-anticipated next entry in the Call of Duty series managed to grab my attention as much as the talented people who created some amazing costumes to wear for the expo. Regardless of how skilled their makers are none of the cosplay outfits failed to impress us and I simply couldn’t take enough photos in the three days to bring you their awesomeness. Some cosplayers became the characters they portrayed bringing them to life – these were the most impressive of all as you find yourself believing the character is actually standing right there in front of you.
Every single cosplayer we spoke to turned out to be very approachable and more than happy to talk about their outfits – some even visited our little website afterwards to say hello. If that was you – you rock! To bring you our picks of the best cosplay at EGX 2014 we asked our friend and expert Tim from GeekOut South-West to select the top ten from our photos and comment on what makes them special. <He's very dedicated to cosplay and is known to put a lot of effort into creating a wealth of costumes and the best at becoming that character; it was he who introduced us to the performance art at Kitacon back in March 2014 and has kept us in the loop ever since. Now let’s get on with the show!
10. Armor King from Tekken
Tim: “This is a proper home-made Armor King outfit and it looks great. I recognised the character immediately (even without the belt buckle telling you so) and it brings a smile to my face. The best part of the cosplay here is actually the pose, which shows the person doing it knows their character.”
9. Penguin from Batman comics
8. The RED Team from Team Fortress 2
Tim: “This is a heck of a quirky Team Fortress 2 group! That’s all that needs to be said – they were recognisably Team Red. Especially the one in blue. Definitely not a spy.”
7. Elisabeth from BioShock Infinite: Burial at Sea
Tim: “Wow! I’m digging this. I don’t actually know the character; however, the quality of the costume along with the fact that the cosplayer has made an excellent effort to display the personality means they had to be given a spot in the top ten. Nicely done!”
6. Psycho Bandit from Borderlands
Tim: “This looks awesome and is striking a pose familiar of the character. The angle of the shot helps it too. I like how the costume itself is basically quite simple but it’s all down to the detailing. From the incredibly detailed mask to the body paints, even the clips in the arm wraps are brilliant.”
Tim: “They’ve come together to brawl. Nah, not really, but they were rudely interrupted when they were clearly in the middle of something. Don’t mess with a Princess Peach with a green mushroom. In all honesty, this picture is brilliant and the cosplayers are bang on with their costumes. I love all the detail and work gone into them.”
4. Ghillie suits from most shooter games
Tim: “Right, let’s get to the nitty-gritty with this one. Be in their shoes for a minute: that’s a lot of moss all over them. Imagine how hot that is during an expo? Yeah, these guys are doing it because they love to, not because it feels good. Great work!”
3. Auron and Yuna from Final Fantasy X
2. Harkyn from Lords of the Fallen
Tim: “Look at the massive detail on those pauldrons… in fact no, look at the detail of all of this costume! This is insanely cool to look at and he’s displaying the mood of the character perfectly. Seriously, this had to be in the top ten.”
1. Ghostbuster from… Ghostbusters
Tim: “My goodness, he’s been ripped out of the movie itself. Look at this: he’s got the contraptions, he’s reading the device and boom – he’s ready to bust some ghosts. Speaking of which, isn’t there a new Ghostbusters movie being dreamed up right now?”
A big thanks to Tim for picking our cosplay top ten and I’m really pleased about his choice for number one as that was my favourite too. I grew up obsessed with Ghostbusters and my jaw dropped when we found this cosplayer; I have never seen such an authentic recreation of the proton pack, PKE meter and ghost trap ever in my life. The photos don’t do the costume justice – everything was alive with glowing lights and sound. If I could have anything in life it would be a real working proton pack and a Delorean with a flux capacitor.
Geek mode now off – if you appear in one of our photos please leave us a comment below along with your name, website or cosplay group and I’ll be sure to add that to your image.
