We first heard about Her Story in the press around a month ago, and wondered how its use of full-motion video (FMV) would turn out. We chatted to creator Sam Barlow at this year’s Rezzed event.

FMV has the potential bring a lot of benefits to gaming but it can also cause plenty of challenges – for example, the difficulty in covering all possible outcomes of an action and smoothly transitioning between videos. I know plenty of gamers who have an aversion to this type of presentation and personally I’m not entirely keen either; playing The 7th Guest was almost enough to put me off for life. However, I was keen to try out Her Story at Rezzed 2015 as the concept seemed like an extremely interesting one and I thought it might just be enough to make me change my mind.
We had the opportunity to speak to creator Sam Barlow, writer and designer of Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, and he explained: “This is a game in which you get to interact with a very old police database full of video footage. This is footage of police interviews with this woman talking about her husband over seven different interviews. Very simply as a player, you get to search through this database, sift through it, and uncover layers of story by looking at these different video clips.” You can take a look at our interview below.
So did Her Story manage to change my mind on FMV? You know what, I think it might just have done. Here’s an example of when this kind of presentation fits the story perfectly and I’m not sure it would have worked as well as it does in any other format. The quality of the acting definitely helps and top marks go to Viva Seifert as I found myself eager to find out more about the central character and her missing husband Simon. Is she lying about his disappearance?
Her Story is due out on iOS, Mac and PC very soon. If you can’t wait for further details and fancy yourself as a detective, head over the official website where you can pre-order the game or the Steam Greenlight page for more information.
